Performance Management in a Virtual Working Environment

Many employees are now working remotely and this seems it could be the case long-term, or even forever, in many organizations.

This wasn’t something managers were prepared for and leading teams and individuals remotely is not always easy.

It’s extremely important to ensure managers hold employees accountable in today's virtual environment, while also building a trusting relationship.

Instead of evaluating work on the amount of time someone spent logged into the computer, managers should simply look at the work performed.

They should also meet with their team and individuals on a regularly scheduled basis and hold true to these scheduled times.

Unless absolutely necessary, these meetings should not be changed or canceled, so employees feel valued and know they will have time to speak about any issues or challenges they are facing.

Managers need to be transparent about deliverables and expectations. Communicate about changes in performance, work hours, work load, job duties, etc. Keep the lines open and be as available as possible, especially while everyone navigates the new, virtual working space.
